Diabetes impacts the lives of millions of people. It’s a disease that affects your diet, mobility and other aspects of daily life. With multiple types, diabetes is becoming more common as people deal with the effects of being overweight and obese.

Bellin Health Home Care Equipment is here to be your resource for understanding diabetes and to help you by providing the medical equipment to reduce the disease’s effects. In today’s blog, we’ll discuss the differences between type 1 and type 2 diabetes to give you a better understanding of what to expect if you’re diagnosed with either condition.

What to Expect with Type 1 Diabetes

This form of diabetes is usually more common among children, but can develop in adults. It occurs when your body doesn’t produce enough insulin, a hormone that allows the body absorb sugar. Symptoms include unintended weight loss, sudden mood changes, frequent urination, hunger, blurred vision and several other signs.

The primary treatment for type 1 diabetes include taking insulin. This can be done through regular injections or with an insulin pump, with the goal to help provide the body with the insulin that it is no longer being produced naturally. Other treatment options include monitoring carbohydrate intake, monitoring blood sugar levels, eating healthier and getting regular exercise.

What to Expect with Type 2 Diabetes

Type 2 diabetes has become more prevalent in recent years. This type of diabetes either limits or completely stops the body’s ability to metabolize sugar by resisting insulin or slowing production of insulin. Symptoms for type 1 and type 2 diabetes are very similar, but appear more gradually and later in life. Like type 1 diabetes, there is no cure for type 2 diabetes, but it can be effectively managed with a healthy diet and regular exercise.
