Diabetes and Thanksgiving: 4 Healthy Tips for Holiday Potlucks

Thanksgiving is a time of food, family and football. But, for those who are living with diabetes, it can also be a time of temptation to abandon your diet and eat food that isn’t all that great for you. For today’s blog, we’d like to cover how to stay healthy at Thanksgiving dinner:

  1. Watch your portions

Commit to getting all the food you want in one trip, and skip the seconds and thirds. When you do fill up your plate, don’t do it to the point that it’s overflowing. Choose just enough to keep your stomach satisfied without stuffing yourself.

  1. Skip the green bean casserole

It’s a Thanksgiving favorite, but it’s full of calories and carbohydrates and other things you want to avoid when you’re living with diabetes. Instead, reach for some non-starchy vegetables or vegetables that aren’t swimming in creamy sauces.

  1. Trim the turkey… of the extras

While turkey itself is packed with good nutrients, people often do things to it during Thanksgiving that can make it really unhealthy. Make sure it’s oven-roasted or smoked instead of deep-fried. Remove its skin before you eat it. Although you may want to drown it in gravy, limit yourself to just enough to give it flavor.

  1. Pass on loaded potatoes

Potatoes are a staple at Thanksgiving dinner, but just like turkey, they can be loaded with things that are not healthy for you. Pass on foods such as gravy, sour cream and extra sweetener added to the sweet potatoes. Instead, use pepper or Greek yogurt to flavor them. Or, try eating plain sweet potatoes. They have a lot of natural flavor, so they don’t need much added!
