FAST: Signs of a Stroke

Posted on: May 17th, 2017 by Bellin Health Home Care Equipment Blogger

Each year, 130,000 Americans die as a result of a stroke, and many more become permanently disabled because of it. These devastating effects can be mitigated or even prevented if action is taken as soon as symptoms of a stroke start to appear. Some of those include:

  • Trouble speaking or understanding things
  • Weakness or numbness on only one side of the body
  • Difficulty seeing out of one or both eyes
  • A migraine or severe headache that occurs without reason
  • Dizziness or loss of balance

It’s important to note that these symptoms tend to appear out of nowhere and with no known cause. Because there’s a number of other medical conditions that can also cause these signs to manifest suddenly, there’s an easy test you can do to see if someone is truly having a stroke. It can be quickly remembered with the following acronym: F.A.S.T.:

  • FACE – One of the first warning signs of a stroke is a drooping face. Ask the person to smile. Does one side of their face appear lopsided?
  • ARMS – Ask the person to raise both arms. If one arm drifts downward when both arms are raised, this may be a good indicator of a stroke.
  • SPEECH – Have the person try to say a simple phrase, such as “The grass is green.” If speech is slurred or if you can’t understand them at all, a stroke may be occurring.
  • TIME – Acting FAST is extremely important – If you notice any of the signs listed above, call 911 immediately.
