All kinds of great things happen in the summer—the weather warms up, family members come for a visit, and you can finally do some work to your yard. But summer also brings tornados. This kind of weather can be worse for Older Americans for a number of reasons. Here at Bellin Health Home Care Equipment, we thought we would offer some tips on how to stay safe in bad weather:

  • Have a safe area that is quick and easy to get to. For many Older Americans, this safe area is in the basement. This is where things can start to turn dangerous. Cellar steps can be hard to get down, especially if you have limited mobility. Here at Bellin Health Home Care Equipment, we have products that can work around this, such as a stair lift.
  • Have an emergency plan in place that all your loved ones are aware of. This includes a place to meet up after a disaster, escape routes and safe areas. That way, if they do need to look for you afterwards, they can find you more quickly.
  • Make sure you have a bag or suitcase in your safe area with essential supplies such as extra medication, water, flashlights and protein bars.
  • Listen to the warnings, and make sure you heed them! Many Older Americans are harmed in tornado weather because they’ve just heard too many warnings over the years that ended up not being necessary. But remember, all it takes is one time to not heed a warning for things to turn tragic.

We know that as you age, factors such as bad weather can make it more and more difficult to maintain your independence. At Bellin Health Home Care Equipment, we do all we can to ensure that you can continue to live in your own home for as long as possible. We carry a number of products in our online catalog that can help you do just that.
