Is this your year to explore?

Is 2015 your year to explore your bucket list destinations? Air travel with limited mobility can pose some unique challenges, but if you take time to plan ahead and do some research, you can have a successful and fun trip! Bel Regional Home Medical has gathered some ideas to help you and your travel mates have an adventure to remember.

Start planning early: Book your flights far in advance, speaking directly with the airline to ensure that any mobility-related needs will be recorded and met. If you will need a wheelchair at the airport, be sure to reserve one at this time and specify if you would like to have an airport employee accompany you through the airport. If you will be using your own wheelchair, check with the airline to see how it will be transported. Foldable chairs can often be stored onboard, while manual wheelchairs that do not fold must usually be checked for transport in the cargo hold.

Give yourself some space: When making reservations, request a specific seat if needed, such as a bulkhead seat or aisle seat to help with wheelchair and walker transfers.

Leave extra time: When booking, check layover lengths to be sure that you will have adequate time to board and exit the aircraft and navigate to your connecting gate. 90 minutes is a suggested minimum for those with limited mobility, but a longer time might be required if immigration checkpoints will be involved. On your departure day, arrive at the airport one hour earlier than the airline advises.
