In the last couple of decades, there have been incredible advances in medicine. We’re living longer now, and that means it is now more important than ever to make sure that we stay healthy as we age.

Tip to Stay Active: Start Slow

This is a good piece of advice if you’re starting exercise, no matter how old you are. Many people make the mistake of trying to do too much, too soon when they make the decision to start exercising. As you age, this advice becomes more important. Start slow with exercises you know you can manage. Starting too fast means you risk injury, and as you age it takes longer to recover.

Tip to Stay Active: Maintain a Schedule

Developing a schedule gives you something to stick to when you exercise and helps hold you accountable. The other benefit of maintaining a schedule is you can help plan out your exercises to make sure you have a good variety of activities. Variety is important when exercising, as it helps develop well-rounded fitness and prevents you from tiring out certain muscle groups, which can lead to injury.

Tip to Stay Active: Try Group Fitness

Many communities offer group fitness classes for seniors. These classes offer multiple benefits. First, if you know there are other people in the class, you’re less likely to skip sessions, which will help you further your goals. Secondly, group classes give you a support system and a healthy amount of competition that encourages you to push yourself to improve your fitness.
