Supporting Women in their Fight Against Breast Cancer

Posted on: October 22nd, 2015 by Bellin Health Home Care Equipment Blogger

Week-3-Post-2

Approximately one in eight women in the United States will develop invasive breast cancer at some point in their life. With the pervasiveness of this disease, many of us will have mothers, sisters, daughters, wives, friends or other loved ones who will have to fight it. Here are some ways that you can show support to the woman in your life who is living with breast cancer:

Listen

Breast cancer means a woman will have to make a number of tough healthcare decisions, and her current treatment may be the only thing she wants to talk about. The best thing that you can do is listen to her as she works through the options that are in front of her.

Attend appointments

There will be a lot of appointments with doctors and a lot of information to digest during those sessions. It can be overwhelming at times. Having someone there will help her feel less alone.

Be her advocate

If there is a course of care that she feels she should take, stand with her as she talks to her healthcare providers. Back up what she is saying. If she wants to try several different clinics or different methods of treatment, help her make those phone calls and schedule appointments.

Let her know she is still beautiful

During the course of cancer treatment, a woman may lose her hair or one or both of her breasts. She may not feel beautiful or feminine anymore. Assure her that she is still a beautiful person, inside and out.

Reach out to her

Sometimes, people will be hesitant to call a loved one living with breast cancer because they are afraid of bothering her. DO reach out. Even if you just let her know you are thinking about her, it will help.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and Bellin Health Home Care Equipment encourages all women to receive regular screenings.
