Why Great Sleep Matters

Posted on: March 9th, 2016 by Bellin Health Home Care Equipment Blogger

great sleep

Burning eyes, face-splitting yawns, trains of thought running off the tracks… if a day at the office feels like torture following a night of poor sleep, that’s because it technically is. The CIA capitalizes on sleep deprivation as an “enhanced interrogation technique,” as a tired brain jumpstarts a host of mental, physical, and emotional issues. Consider the cost of a rough night:

  1. Sends risk for accidents skyrocketing. The Challenger explosion, Chernobyl nuclear meltdown, and the Exxon Oil spill were national disasters stemming from human error and lack of sleep. While a rough night sleep kills nothing but productivity at your desk the next morning, it has critical implications for those on the road. Because it stunts reaction time and decision making, sleep loss contributes to as many fatal vehicular accidents as alcohol.
  2. Warps biology. Your body is a factory, and it needs the clean-up crew that is sleep to keep everything in working order over the night shift. Your brain naturally repairs itself and regulates body functions when you achieve deep level sleep. Block your body from this restoration, and risk abounds. Stroke, obesity, diabetes, heart disease, hypertension and certain cancers are far more prevalent in patients with chronic sleep deprivation than those that secure the recommended 7-9 hours of slumber each night.
  3. Creates difficulty controlling & reading emotions: The amygdala, the center of your brain responsible for monitoring emotions, gets hazy without sleep. Not only can a bad night make you cranky the next day, but it interferes with your ability to read the emotions of others, sparking social interactions that head south both at work and at home.
  4. Quashes creativity. While you sleep, your brain sifts through memories from the day, consolidating and strengthening them for later use. During this process, memories are also restructured and reorganized, sparking out-of-the-box ideas that creativity is all about. Cut sleep and your brainstorming sessions will face a drought.
  5. Speeds up the aging process. “Beauty sleep” is real. When your body is deprived of sleep, it floods your systems with the stress hormone cortisol. In excess, cortisol tears away at collagen, which is responsible for skin elasticity and smoothness. Too much stress + too little cortisol = fine lines and wrinkles, dark under eye circles, and sallow, dull skin.
